Sligo Rovers and Cork City to meet in LOI Premier Division relegation six-pointer
1351

Cork City are mired in a relegation battle in the League of Ireland Premier Division. City are ninth in the standings, with 23 points.

On Saturday, Cork will face off with Sligo Rovers in a six-point relegation clash.

Sligo Rovers are seventh in the standings and three points ahead of City. Sitting in between the two teams are Drogheda United on 25 points.

The race for survival is coming to a head, as three teams try to avoid the relegation playoff place.

There are still plenty of matches left in the Premier Division season. Both clubs will play their 24th matches of the season, respectively.

Each Premier Division club will play 36 times before the end of the campaign in Ireland.

Sligo Rover and Cork City met twice already this season in the league. Cork City took four points from those matches.

The teams drew 2-2 at Sligo’s The Showgrounds before City claimed a 1-0 win at home.

The game also featured a red card, as City’s Matt Healy was sent off for a second yellow.

Cork City just edged Sligo in their last six head-to-head meetings, with three wins, one draw, and two defeats.

City outscored Sligo 12-10 in those six matches and the teams combined for 21 yellows and one red card.

Sligo Rovers go into the game on a run of poor form. They took just four points from the last six games. Rovers were outscored 11-6 across the last six games.

Cork City aren’t in good form either. City picked up eight points from the last six games in the Premier Division. However, they failed to win any of their last four league matches.

City manager Colin Healy will be without midfielder Albin Winbo due to a knee injury. Midfielder Darragh Crowley is also out with a knee injury.

Forward Ethon Varian will also miss the game thanks to a knee injury.

Ruairi Keating leads City in goals with eight. He scored when Cork won 1-0 in their last meeting.

Sligo manager John Russell has several injuries going into the game. Midfielders Karl O’Sullivan and Mark Byrne are both unlikely to play.

Defenders Gary Boylan, James Finnerty, and Garry Buckley are all carrying injuries as well. All three are unlikely to make the squad for the match.

With both teams on a run of poor form, Saturday’s game at The Showgrounds should finish 1-1. The last time the teams met at The Showgrounds, the game ended as a draw. Saturday’s meeting should also finish in a stalemate.
