Fluminense expected to edge out arch-rivals Flamengo

The Fla-Flu derby takes centre stage in the Brazilian top flight this weekend as Fluminense host cross-town rivals Flamengo at the Maracana on Sunday.

The old foes are separated by only two points in the Serie A table, with second-placed Flamengo leading fourth-placed Fluminense.

Can Flamengo extend their lead over their rivals and close the gap on high-flying Botafogo? Or will Fluminense claim the bragging rights on this occasion?

Fluminense claimed a 2-0 victory over Internacional last time out, meaning they have lost just one of their last six league encounters.

That win extended Flu’s unbeaten streak on home soil in the league to 10 matches, and they have won five and drawn two of their seven home games this season.

Better still, Fluminense have suffered a solitary defeat in their previous 20 home games in Serie A, underlining their strength at the Maracana.

Given that only four teams have conceded fewer Serie A goals than Flu this season, the hosts will be confident of overcoming their rivals this weekend.

Flamengo, meanwhile, dished up a 1-1 draw with Palmeiras last time out, extending their unbeaten run to five games in all competitions.

When you look at the bigger picture, Flamengo have lost just one of their previous 16 matches, picking up 11 wins and four draws.

That said, Fla have struggled for consistency on the road this year, recording three wins, one draw and three losses across their seven away league outs.

It is also worth pointing out that Flamengo have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their previous 13 away games in Serie A.

Head-to-head: Fluminense hold the upper hand on Flamengo as things stand, with Flu losing just three of the past 12 meetings between the teams.

However, Flamengo knocked Fluminense out of the Copa do Brasil earlier this year, notching a 2-0 aggregate victory.

Team news: Fluminense look set to be without the injured pair of Jorge and Alexsander for the foreseeable future.

On the flip side, Flamengo are still without long-term absentee Gabriel Noga as the 21-year-old defender continues to recover from a serious knee injury.

Given Fluminense’s hugely impressive record on home soil in recent times, the hosts look set to come out on top this weekend.

With that in mind, Forebet predicts that Fluminense will claim the Fla-Flu bragging rights on Sunday, scoring over 1.5 goals en route to victory.
