Barcelona SC and Cerro Porteno will meet on Thursday on the final day of the Copa Libertadores group stage. Neither team can advance to the Copa Libertadores knockout stage. But both sides are fighting for a spot in the Copa Sudamericana.
The third-place finisher in Group C will move into the Copa Sudamericana. The fourth-place finisher will end their continental journey in South American football.
Heading into Thursday’s matchday No 6 game, Barcelona SC are third in the group with three points from five games. Cerro Porteno are also on three points from five games, but their inferior goal difference has them going out of the tournament currently.
Cerro Porteno’s only chance of progressing to the Copa Sudamericana is to win on Thursday night in Ecuador. It won’t be an easy match for the Paraguayan team.
Cerro Porteno lost both of their previous away matches in the Copa Libertadores this season.
Since 2020, these teams have met three times in Copa Libertadores play. Their meetings in 2020 saw Barcelona SC win both games by a combined score of 5-0.
This season’s Copa Libertadores group stage went a little differently, as Cerro Porteno won the reverse meeting 2-1 in Paraguay. Home-field advantage played a key role in the result.
Cerro Porteno drew first blood thanks to a Claudio Aquino penalty in the 28th minute. Barcelona SC equalised on 70 minutes thanks to a goal from Cristian Jonatan Ortiz.
But Cerro Porteno’s Diego Churin found the back of the net three minutes later for the win.
Six yellow cards were handed out in a fiery display in Paraguay. The bad blood could continue in the reverse fixture, with a place in the Copa Sudamericana on the line.
Barcelona SC last played on June 19, losing 2-1 to Universidad Catolica in the Ecuadorian Serie A.
Five of Barcelona SC’s last six games ended in defeat. Midfielder Damian Diaz is in good form for the club. He has nine goals in the Serie A.
Cerro Porteno are also on a run of poor form. They failed to win seven of their last eight matches in all competitions.
The team last played on June 11, drawing 2-2 with Tacuary FCB in the Paraguayan Apertura.
Barcelona SC won their previous meeting with Cerro Porteno in Ecuador at the Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha.
The Bullfighters should post another home win over Cerro Porteno, with the game ending 2-0. The win will send Barcelona SC into the Copa Sudamericana.
