A Draw Expected in the Must-Win Relegation Playoff Battle Spezia and Verona
11969

It’s all or nothing for Spezia and Hellas Verona this Sunday night at the Mapei Stadium as both clubs finished on the same amount of points and must now battle in a relegation playoff scrap to determine who heads into Serie B.

The loser of this match will head down into Italy’s second tier and join Cremonese and Sampdoria in doing so. At the same time, this game could head to extra time and eventually penalties.

The venue is chosen as the Mapei stadium as it is a neutral ground, and both teams head into this match off the back of collecting 31 points each.

Hellas Verona ended in the relegation zone and scored just 31 goals and let in 59. Spezia also scored just 31 times and lost 19 compared to Verona's 21.

There was a time when it looked as if, from out of nowhere, Vernona would rocket themselves into safety after defeating Sassuolo, Bologna and drawing with Napoli.

It moved the club way higher in the table but it did nothing in the end for their hopes of getting out of the bottom three.

Since then, they've gone on to lose at home to Torino and lose in a 6-0 rout at home to Inter Milan as well. Recent defeats to Atalanta and AC Milan by 3-1 scorelines mean their last win was in a 1-0 away trip victory to Lecce, as they also drew with Empoli.

In the end, Verona stayed in the relegation zone for many months and although fans had great hope at one stage, it looked as if things were always going to head to a relegation playoff fight with barely anything separating them from Spezia.

For Spezia, they head into this game off the back of losing 2-1 to Roma on the final day of the season that saw Dimitris Nikolaou score after six minutes in the capital and give his side great hope of surviving.

Two goals later ensured that goal meant nothing, as Kelvin Amian Adou was also sent off in the 88th minute and now misses this game.

They also lost 4-0 to Torino before that and drew 0-0 with Lecce. This means their last win and only victory in the past two months has been in a 2-0 win over AC Milan.

Forebet predicts a draw here with barely anything keeping these two adrift from one another in the Serie A 38-game season. Forebet also predicts the game to see under 2.5 goals.
