Sevilla aiming for fourth straight La Liga match without a defeat against Elche
Elche CF vs Sevilla FC - 24/05/2023

Sevilla’s story is one of the most remarkable in all of European football this season. Under the management of Julen Lopetegui and Jorge Sampaoli, the managers struggled to get the best out of the squad, and both were sacked earlier in the campaign.
In stepped Jose Luis Mendilibar, a manager with only one previous trophy to his name (a Segunda championship). Mendilibar was a veteran of many relegation battles, making him ideal for Sevilla.
Mendilibar hasn’t just rescued Sevilla’s La Liga status, however. He has Los Rojiblancos in the final of the Europa League, where they will face off with Serie A’s Roma.
On Wednesday night, Sevilla will travel to Elche to face off with La Liga’s last-placed team. Elche have been relegated from La Liga following a miserable season.
The team compiled just 20 points from 35 matches. However, since being relegated, Elche are unbeaten in three of their last four games.
The pressure to win is now off Elche. Their last two matches ended without a defeat. Elche will face an in-form Sevilla on Wednesday night.
Los Rojiblancos are unbeaten in three straight matches and are coming off a nil-nil draw with Real Betis.
Sevilla cannot qualify for Europe through the league standings. Mendilibar will need to lead the team to a win in the Europa League final to qualify for the Champions League next term. Winning the final will be difficult against the very defensive Roma and Jose Mourinho.
Elche picked up seven points from the last six matches. It is one of their best returns this season. The Green Striped Ones even outscored their last six opponents 7-6.
Sevilla defeated 10-man Elche earlier this season 3-0. Youssef En-Nesyri scored twice while Marcos Acuna added another.
Elche’s Pedro Bigas was sent off in the first half with a straight red card.
Elche’s Oscar Mascarell could miss the game due to a muscle injury. Defender Jose Angel Carmona is also a doubt to play following a hamstring strain.
Mendilibar’s main injury concern is Joan Jordan. The defensive midfielder is out with an Achilles tendon injury. There is a slim chance that Jordan could return in time for the Europa League final on May 31.
Sevilla are in good form and headed to a European final. Los Rojiblancos should post a win over Elche by slim margins.
The game should end 2-1 in favour of Sevilla. En-Nesyri is in good form for Sevilla and will be difficult for Elche’s woeful defence to slow down.
