Rio rivals Fluminense and Flamengo will meet in the latest edition of the Fla-Flu Derby on Tuesday night (Wednesday European time). The derby will come in the Copa do Brasil round of 16.

The clubs have experienced differing results in the Brazilian Serie A to start the campaign. Fluminense are third in the standings after six matches and are just two points off first-place Botafogo.

Flamengo, on the other hand, are ninth after a sluggish start to the campaign. The team is starting to heat up, however. Flamengo are on a two-match league winning streak. Coach Jorge Sampaoli, who managed Spain’s Sevilla earlier this year, will hope Flamengo’s form can continue.

Fluminense and Flamengo have already met three times in 2023. The rivals played three times in the Rio state tournament, with Fluminense winning twice and Flamengo winning once. Fluminense outscored Flamengo 6-4 across the three derby matches.

After a strong start in the state tournament, Flamengo cooled off under Sampaoli. The manager has struggled to get wins in the domestic league and the Copa Libertadores. Results are improving after Flamengo defeated Goias and Bahia in back-to-back matches.

Fluminense are on a good run of form and unbeaten in four straight games. Three of the four matches ended as wins for Fluminense. They defeated Cruzeiro and Cuiaba in back-to-back matches by identical 2-0 scorelines.

Flamengo have stuttered on the road this season with a record of 5W-4D-5L. But this is the Fla-Flu Derby, and anything can happen between the Rio rivals. Fluminense’s home record is 11W-2D-1L in 2023 in all competitions.

Injuries could play a factor in the outcome for both teams. Sampaoli should be without midfielder Gerson due to a groin injury. Defenders Guillermo Valera, Filipe Luis, and Matheuzinho are all likely to miss due to their respective injuries. Forward Pedro is also a doubt to make the squad.

Fluminense’s Fernando Diniz won’t have Alexsander available following a knee injury. Defender Samuel Xavier is out with a thigh strain. Forwards Keno and Marrony are major doubts to make the squad.

In addition, Diniz won’t be able to call upon defender Jorge or midfielder Gustavo Apis. Both are rehabbing ACL injuries. Midfielder Martinelli could be available after recovering from a thigh injury.

A Fla-Flu Derby in the Copa do Brasil round of 16 is a great sight in Brazilian football. It should lead to a match full of goals as the teams combine for a 2-2 draw.

Fluminense average 2.27 goals scored per game this season in all competitions. Flamengo average 1.89 goals scored. It should be a thriller in Rio.
