Roma took one step toward the Europa League final in midweek, with a 1-0 win over Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen at the Stadio Olimpico.

Jose Mourinho could lead the Giallorossi to back-to-back European trophies, winning the Conference League in 2022 and the European League in 2023.

It would be one of the most unique two-year spans in European football history. However, Roma are still far away from winning silverware this season. On Sunday, the Romans will turn their attention back to Serie A for a big clash with Bologna.

Roma are seventh in the standings, one point off the top six. Five points separate Mourinho’s team from Champions League qualification. It may take winning the Europa League for the club to qualify for the Champions League for next season.

Bologna are eighth in the competition and out of the running for European qualification. It has been a promising season under coach Thiago Motta. However, the Rossoblu may have difficulty keeping hold of the former Serie A winner.

The Rossoblu hit a sticky patch in recent matches in terms of form. They are winless in five straight Serie A matches. Bologna did pick up six points from the last six matches, scoring seven times and conceding eight.

Roma, on the other hand, took eight points from the last 18 points on offer. The team scored seven goals and conceded seven times. Roma are winless in four straight Serie A matches and are coming off a 2-0 loss to Inter Milan at home.

The Giallorossi edged Bologna in their last six matches, with a record of 3W-1D-2L. Earlier this season, Roma claimed a narrow 1-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. A sixth-minute Lorenzo Pellegrini penalty was enough to seal the win.

Roma will play the second leg of their Europa League semifinal next Thursday. Mourinho needs to keep the squad from overlooking Bologna if Roma are to finish in the top six in Serie A.

Motta will be without defender Stefan Posch due to a suspension. Fellow defenders Adama Soumaoro and Kyriakopoulos are nursing injuries and fitness. Forward Nicola Sansone is a doubt due to physical discomfort. Midfielder Roberto Soriano is out following a ligament injury.

Mourinho has just one injury problem as defender Marash Kumbulla is out with an ACL injury. The Roma coach may need to rotate the side after Thursday’s Europa League semifinal first-leg win.

Roma could overlook Bologna on Sunday. They are winless in four straight Serie A games. Sunday’s match in Bologna should finish 1-1 between the Serie A rivals.
