Milan and Lazio braced for pivotal Serie A showdown

Lazio will be looking to cement second place in the Serie A table when they travel to the San Siro to take on AC Milan on Saturday afternoon.

Although champions-elect Napoli are out of Lazio’s reach, the Eagles remain six points inside the Champions League places with five games remaining.

Milan, on the other hand, find themselves sixth – two points shy of the top four – as the reigning champions have struggled for consistency in recent weeks.

Indeed, Milan have drawn four of their last five Serie A matches, recording a goalless draw with Empoli before playing out 1-1 draws with Bologna, Roma and Cremonese.

Although Milan have avoided defeat in each of their previous six league outings, they have only taken 10 points from a possible 18 in that time.

That said, the Nerazzurri are unbeaten in six Serie A matches on home soil, with their last home loss coming back in January.

It is also worth noting that Milan have lost just seven of their previous 49 league encounters, highlighting their strength in recent times.

On the flip side, Lazio claimed a 2-0 victory over Sassuolo on Wednesday to delay Napoli’s inevitable Serie A title celebrations.

Maurizio Sarri’s men have now won five of their last seven league matches, with eight victories coming in their previous 11.

Better still, Lazio have lost just three of their last 17 Serie A encounters, including a solitary defeat in their previous eight away outings.

Having conceded only 24 goals in 33 league games this season, the Eagles also boast the second-best defensive record in the division.

Head-to-head: Lazio thrashed Milan 4-0 in the reverse fixture back in January, ending a three-game losing run against the Nerazzurri in the process.

Although the Eagles have won just seven of their previous 45 Serie A matches against Milan, Sarri’s men will fancy their chances of adding a victory to their tally this time around.

Team news: AC Milan will be without the injured Tommaso Pobega on Saturday, with English centre-back Fikayo Tomori is a doubt.

Lazio, meanwhile, look set to be without injured midfielder Danilo Cataldi as he continues to recover from a calf problem.

Given that Milan have failed to win four of their last five league games, Lazio are on course to claim a rare victory in this fixture.

Forebet predicts that both teams will score at the San Siro. However, Lazio are expected to outscore AC Milan to snatch all three points.
