Monaco desperate to keep UCL qualification hopes alive with win over Montpellier

Monaco go into Ligue 1’s round 33 on the outside of the Champions League qualification places. Les Monegasque are fourth in the division, with five points separating them from the final Champions League qualification place.

The team from the French principality are chasing Lens and Marseille and have six matches to overhaul the deficit. On Sunday, Monaco will welcome Montpellier to the Stade Louis II. Montpellier are down in the standings in 14th place after 32 matches.

La Paillade are just eight points off the bottom four. Coach Michel Der Zakarian doesn’t want the team to get sucked into a late relegation battle. Yet, Montpellier could end the season fighting against the drop.

Der Zakarian took the reins of Montpellier in February after Romain Pitau was dismissed following several months as interim manager. Der Zakarian has done well enough to get Montpellier eight points clear of relegation with six matches left to play.

Montpellier do not play well against Monaco. La Paillade won just one of their last six matches versus Les Monegasque. The reverse fixture finished 2-0 in favour of Monaco. Breel Embolo and Myron Boadu scored in the second half of the match to send Monaco to the win.

Both teams are in form heading into round 33. Monaco picked up 10 points from the last 18 points on offer. They scored 11 times but conceded 10 goals to opponents.

Montpellier, on the other hand, secured 10 points from the last six fixtures. They scored just seven times and conceded six goals to opponents. Montpellier are not a good away team. La Paillade have a record of 5W-2D-8L away from home this season.

Monaco play well at the Stade Louis II. Les Monegasque have a record of 9W-2D-5L and a goal difference of +9.

Monaco have dominated the head-to-head series of matches against Montpellier dating back to 1993. The teams met 45 times, with Monaco posting a record of 28W-13D-4L. They conceded an average of just 0.82 goals to Montpellier in the 45 matches.

Der Zakarian will be without Teji Savanier due to a suspension. Meanwhile, the trio of Theo Sainte-Luce, Maxime Esteve, and Beni Makouana are all set to miss out through injury.

Monaco’s Gelson Martins is likely to miss the match due to personal reasons. Forward Breel Embolo is a doubt to play following a knee injury. Defender Malang Sarr is also a doubt after an abdominal injury.

Monaco have a fantastic historical record against Montpellier. It should help them post a 3-1 win over Montpellier at home, as they improve their chances of finishing in the top three.
