Inter Milan will play Salernitana on Friday in a must-win match in Serie A. The Nerazzurri are fourth in the Serie A standings and only ahead of Roma in the race for the final Champions League qualification place thanks to goal difference.
The Nerazzurri are coming off a midweek Coppa Italia 1-1 draw with Juventus in the first leg of the semifinal. Romelu Lukaku’s 90th-minute goals gave Inter a share of the spoils in Turin. Simone Inzaghi’s team are on a poor run of form, with three straight Serie A games ending in defeat.
Salernitana are also on a poor run of form. The Granata drew each of their last four games in Serie A. Nine points separate Salernitana from the relegation zone.
Inter won 2-0 at San Siro against Salernitana earlier this season. Lautaro Martinez and Nicolo Barella scored on either side of halftime to lead the team to victory. In three all-time Serie A matches between these clubs, Inter outscored Salernitana 12-0.
The Nerazzurri only took six points from their last six games. Goals dried up for Inter. They scored a mere six goals in the last six matches, and the defence conceded six times. Inter are struggling on the road, as they lost their last two matches away from San Siro.
Salernitana picked up seven points from their last 18 points on offer in the league. They outscored their last six opponents 7-6. The Granata are not a strong home team. They have a record of four wins, four draws, and six defeats at home, with a –1-goal difference.
Inzaghi may need to rotate the side for the trip to Salernitana after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw in the Coppa Italia with Juventus. The coach won’t have midfielder Danilo D’Ambrosio due to a suspension.
Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu is a doubt following a thigh injury. Defender Milan Skriniar is also a doubt after suffering a back strain.
Paulo Sousa took charge of Salernitana in February, with the team drifting down the table. Sousa most recently coached Flamengo in Brazil before opting for the Salernitana job.
He could be without Pasquale Mazzocchi due to a muscle injury. Midfielder Domen Crnigoj is also a doubt to play following a calf injury.
Inter won all three previous games versus Salernitana, scoring 12 goals and conceding zero.
The Nerazzurri should post a fourth straight win over the Granata on Friday to end their three-game Serie A losing streak. Inter should win 3-1 and stay in the top four.
