Denmark had a disastrous time at the 2022 World Cup. After being highly touted as a team capable of winning the tournament, the Danes failed to win a match and left Qatar after just three matches.
The Euro 2024 tournament will give Denmark the chance to overcome their shortcomings at the World Cup. Denmark will kick off the Euro 2024 campaign on Thursday night against Finland in Copenhagen. The Danes will begin the night ranked No 18 in the world by FIFA.
Finland, on the other hand, go into the Euro qualifying campaign ranked No 56 by FIFA. The Finns missed out on the World Cup 2022 tournament after failing to qualify.
Coach Markku Kanerva will hope Finland can start the tournament well. Denmark are seen as the top team in Group H, which means the remaining five teams will fight for the second qualifying spot.
Denmark and Finland are joined by Slovenia, Northern Ireland, San Marino, and Kazakhstan in Group H. If Denmark do win the group, then second place should be wide open.
Finland have not fared well against Denmark over the years. The teams first met in 1925, drawing 3-3 in a friendly. Since then, the teams have played an additional 37 times, with Denmark leading the head-to-head record. The Danes’ record is a brilliant 38W-9D-12L.
Denmark have not played an international match in 2023. Finland have played twice, losing to Sweden 2-0 and to Estonia 1-0. Both matches were played in Portugal in January and the squad was mostly made up of domestic players.
The Denmark squad has a lot of familiar faces in it. Kasper Schmeichel is likely to play in goal, Simon Kjaer is back to play in defence, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will line up in midfield. There is no Christian Eriksen, as he recovers from a season-ending injury.
Leeds’ Rasmus Kristensen has been recalled to the side. Meanwhile, Yussuf Poulsen and Kasper Dolberg were left out of the team.
Finland will be anchored by Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky. Teemu Pukki will likely start in attack. Outside of the Norwich City man, Finland lack a high-quality goalscorer. Pukki has 37 goals in 108 appearances for Finland.
Denmark may have disappointed at the FIFA World Cup, but they should get off the mark in Euro qualifying without a problem. The Danes should win 1-0, as they hold off the Finns.
