Union Berlin seeking second straight Bundesliga win on MD 17

Werder Bremen vs Union Berlin - 25/01/2023

Union Berlin seeking second straight Bundesliga win on MD 17
3326

Union Berlin were top of the Bundesliga table during the autumn but slipped down the standings as the FIFA World Cup approached.

The Irons are still only five points behind first-place Bayern Munich ahead of their midweek matchday 17 fixture against Werder Bremen.

Bremen head into the clash on a three-game losing streak in the Bundesliga. The Green and White were thrashed 7-1 by FC Koln at the weekend in a dreadful return from the 2022 FIFA World Cup/Winter Break.

While Bremen lost, Union Berlin defeated Hoffenheim 3-1. After conceding a first-half goal, Union came back in the final 17 minutes with three goals to win the fixture.

Despite defeating Hoffenheim last time out, Union are not in great form. The Irons go into the midweek match having taken seven points from their last six games. Union conceded 15 times across those six games while scoring nine goals.

Six points were picked up by Werder Bremen in their previous six games. The Green and White conceded 18 times and scored six goals in their six matches. Each of Bremen’s last three games ended as defeats.

Union Berlin are on a three-game winning streak against Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga ahead of Wednesday’s match. The Irons saw over 2.5 goals in each of their last six games. Wednesday’s game could once again see goals, especially with Bremen conceding seven at the weekend.

Bremen also saw goals in their recent fixtures. Four consecutive Werder Bremen Bundesliga games ended with over 2.5 goals scored.

Union coach Urs Fischer could have forwards Sven Michel and Andras Schafer back from injuries. Midfielder Morten Thorsby is ruled out of the game and won’t return until February.

Werder Bremen coach Ole Werner will be without the duo of midfielder Romano Schmid and defender Felix Agu.

Bremen aren’t playing well at home this season. The Green and White have a record of 3W-1D-4L with 13 goals conceded and 14 allowed.

Union Berlin did not end the first part of the Bundesliga season in good form. However, the Irons showed what they are capable of against Hoffenheim at the weekend.

The capital club is just five points off first-place Bayern Munich and could make a step closer to the top of the table with a win.

Union Berlin should claim a win at full-time with over 2.5 goals being scored in Bremen. The Irons could get a 3-1 win, as they stay in the Bundesliga title race.
