Manchester City to progress to Carabao Cup SF with win over Southampton

Southampton will welcome Manchester City to St Mary’s on Wednesday night for the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup.

The Saints are rock-bottom of the Premier League standings but go into the final eight of the Carabao Cup with the chance to upset the bookmakers’ favourite to win the competition.

Southampton reached the last eight with a win versus Cambridge United at full-time, a penalty shootout victory against Sheffield Wednesday, and a win at full-time against Lincoln City. All three Carabao Cup wins for Southampton were against lower-league teams.

Manchester City defeated Premier League clubs Chelsea and Liverpool to reach the quarterfinals. The Cityzens have knocked out the two finalists from last season, showing just how high of quality Pep Guardiola’s team is this season.

Manchester City defeated Southampton at the Etihad Stadium in October in the Premier League. The Sky Blues hammered Southampton 4-0, as Joao Cancelo and Phil Foden scored in the opening half before Riyad Mahrez and Erling Haaland scored goals in the second.

The Cityzens are unbeaten in six consecutive fixtures against Southampton in all competitions. However, two of the last four matches between the clubs ended as stalemates. Only one of the last seven matches between the clubs finished as a Southampton win.

Guardiola has a record of 11W-3D-1L in 15 all-time fixtures versus Southampton. Meanwhile, Kevin De Bruyne scored five goals against Southampton in his previous matches against the south coast club. De Bruyne should start as Guardiola plays a strong XI.

The Man City manager will have one eye on Saturday’s Manchester Derby against United. Both clubs are in action in midweek in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals. Man United will have an advantage on Saturday, as they play Tuesday in the cup at home, while City are away a day later.

The Cityzens are coming off a 4-0 FA Cup third-round win over Chelsea. Riyad Mahrez scored twice against Chelsea and has scored in each of his last two games for City. Guardiola could start the Algerian on the right wing.

Guardiola’s only player issues for the game are in the form of defender Ruben Dias and midfielder Jack Grealish. The former is ruled out with a thigh injury, while the latter is a doubt due to an illness.

Southampton manager Nathan Jones will be without Valentino Livramento, Armel Bella-Kotchap, Juan Larios, and Theo Walcott due to injuries. In addition, Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is likely to sit out the game with an ankle injury.

City are in fine form, and just as they do every season under Guardiola, they are peaking at the right time. Manchester City should post a victory over Southampton at full-time to reach the last four. It could be a low-scoring game with City winning by a single goal.
