Bournemouth and Crystal Palace set for PL stalemate

Bournemouth will host Crystal Palace at Dean Court on Saturday as both teams go into matchday No 17 in need of wins.

The Cherries are coming off a 2-0 loss away to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Bournemouth offered little in attack, as they sunk to a fifth loss in the last six matches in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace were beaten 3-0 by Fulham at Selhurst Park in midweek. The defeat was Crystal Palace’s second straight loss. The Eagles go into matchday No 17 with three defeats in their last five games in the league.

Patrick Vieira’s team posted a record of 3W-2D-1L in their last six head-to-head matches against Bournemouth. Palace went unbeaten on their last two trips to Dean Court.

Eleven of Bournemouth’s 16 points in the Premier League have come at home. The Cherries scored nine goals and conceded eight times in their opening eight home fixtures.

Crystal Palace have struggled on the road this season. The Eagles have just one win from seven road matches with three draws and three defeats. Palace were outscored 10-5 in their seven road matches in 2022-23.

Vieira has six players on the injured and suspended list ahead of matchday No 17. Defenders James Tomkins, Tyrick Mitchell, and Marc Guehi are both suspended due to an accumulation of yellow cards and red-card sending-offs.

Sam Johnston is ruled out of the match due to a low back injury. James McArthur has a groin strain which will keep him out of the game, while Nathan Ferguson remains sidelined.

Five players are on the Bournemouth injured list going into the weekend. Manager Gary O’Neil will be without David Brooks due to a thigh injury. Goalkeeper Neto is out of action with a thigh strain.

Midfielder Ryan Fredericks is a major doubt with a leg injury. Midfielder Junior Stanislas is also a major doubt following an injury. Marcus Tavernier has a thigh injury and may not make the squad.

Crystal Palace have scored the sixth-fewest goals in the league this season with just 15. Bournemouth have done little better in front of goal with 18 total team goals. However, the Cherries conceded 34 times in their opening 16 matches.

Bournemouth and Crystal Palace have both tallied four draws this season. Saturday’s New Year’s Eve clash between the midtable teams should finish in a stalemate.

The Cherries have drawn two of eight matches at home, while Palace have three draws from seven games on the road. The game should finish with under 2.5 goals, as the sides draw 1-1.
