Lopetegui to Lead Wolves to a Win Over Gillingham in the EFL Cup
2054

It’s the return of the top flight teams in England already as Wolverhampton Wanderers of the Premier League meet with League Two’s Gillingham in the League Cup just two days after the conclusion of the World Cup in Qatar.

Both of these sides are heading into this game bottom of their respective leagues and it is quite ironic how these two have managed to meet, simply because of how they have both put in record-breaking feats on the goals front.

After 12 games in the Premier League, Wolves had netted only six goals - this was the lowest amount ever recorded for the club after so many games since 1889.

As for Gillingham, they have still only managed to net six goals across the entire 20 games in League Two so far and they now head into this game with the worst goalscoring record in League Two history at this stage in the season.

Wolves will be slightly pleased at the form shown during the World Cup, however. On one hand, they have had a bunch of players in Qatar this past month, but most have returned to the club by this point.

Wolves also played against Empoli and Cadiz in the past three weeks while the World Cup was going on, drawing with Empoli and beating Cadiz 4-3.

Back in the league, however, Wolves have been disastrous. They do head into this game with it being the first for new manager Julen Lopetegui, who joined the club a few months back but has not been able to guide his new team out because of the World Cup.

The Midlands side are sitting last in the league, have won only two games, lost nine and drawn the other four. At the same time, they have the worst goals scored record with just eight netted in 15 games, conceding 24 at the same time with Bruno Lage already getting the sack back in October.

As for Gillingham, they have also won just two games this season in League Two, losing 10 and drawing the other eight. Ironically, they have also let in 24 goals at this stage in the season and head into this clash without a game played last week due to the postponement of their game with Stockport County.

Despite the terrible form, Forebet predicts a win for Wolves here and for the game to see under 2.5 goals
