Belgium to Begin World Cup with Win Over Canada

The second fixture to be played in Group F at the 2022 World Cup is between Belgium and Canada. The match will be played on the 23rd of November at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, Al Rayyan. Belgium are the favourites to win the group, with Canada the outsiders.

Belgium start the tournament on the back of a disappointing 2-1 defeat at the hands of Egypt in a friendly match. Belgium found themselves 2-0 down shortly after the interval, despite fielding a strong starting XI. The Red Devils got a goal back in the 76th minute but could not find the equaliser.

That result means Belgium have lost each of their last 2 games, including a 1-0 loss at the Netherlands in the Nations League. That defeat was enough to see Netherlands win the group and Belgium were forced to settle for second place.

Belgium had little trouble qualifying for the 2022 World Cup and they finished top of their group on 20 points, 5 points clear of Wales in second place.

Belgium were undefeated in their 8 World Cup qualifying matches and the only dropped points came in draws at Wales and the Czech Republic.

Trend show Belgium are not an easy team to beat and they are undefeated in 50 of their last 58 matches. Belgium scored 3 or more goals in 4 of their final 6 World Cup qualifying fixtures.

Canada arrive at the 2022 World Cup having defeated Japan 2-1 in a friendly game prior to the tournament. Canada fell a goal behind after only 9 minutes but equalised just 12 minutes later.

Canada scored the winning goal from the penalty spot at the end of the match to boost their confidence ahead of the competition.

That win means Canada are undefeated in 3 of their last 4 fixtures. They have beaten Qatar and Japan in friendly matches and were held to a 2-2 draw by Bahrain, also in a friendly.

The defeat came at the hands of Uruguay in a friendly match played in September.

In terms of World Cup qualifying, Canada finished top of the group in the third round, above Mexico and the United States.

Canada lost only 2 of their 14 fixtures, which was a tremendous performance and those defeats came in their final 3 games of the group.

Team news and Belgium have question marks over the fitness of striker Romelu Lukaku. He did not feature in the defeat against Egypt but Eden Hazard did play in the game.

Canada will be hoping Alphonso Davies is fit as the Bayern Munich man is their best player. Jonathan David will start in attack.

Belgium will be a little nervous ahead of this game but Canada know they have a huge task on their hands to get anything from the match. With their quality in midfield, Belgium should take control of this game and could come away with a comfortable win, keeping a clean sheet in the process.
