Tottenham to edge Nottingham Forest in Carabao Cup third round

Tottenham Hotspur went to the City Ground earlier this season in the Premier League and left with a 2-0 victory. On Wednesday, Spurs will return to the City Ground, but this time in the Carabao Cup, seeking progression to the fourth round.

Spurs’ victory against Nottingham Forest in September came courtesy of two Harry Kane goals. The England international scored on either side of halftime, as Forest put up a strong fight.

Tottenham are coming off a 2-1 league defeat to Liverpool at home. Manager Antonio Conte will aim to get the team back on track with a victory at the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest drew 2-2 with Brentford at home at the weekend in the league. Forest got the draw thanks to a 90th-minute Brentford own goal. Manager Steve Cooper is aiming for a first win in three games.

The Reds’ most recent victory was against Liverpool in the league. Forest shocked Liverpool 1-0, and they will hope to surprise Tottenham in much the same way on Wednesday.

Cooper will likely be without at least five players due to injuries. Full-backs Omar Richards and Harry Toffolo are both out with leg injuries.

Guilian Biacone has a knee problem and will miss the game. Jack Colback is out with a back issue, and Moussa Niakhate will sit out with a thigh injury.

Conte won’t have three important players due to injuries. Heung-min Son is out with a broken cheekbone. He could miss the World Cup later this month.

Centre-back Cristian Romero is out with a calf problem. Forward Richarlison will miss the game with a calf injury of his own.

Conte could start Lucas Moura and/or Dejan Kulusevski. The duo came off the bench versus Liverpool at the weekend and helped change Spurs’ approach. Both had been injured for some time before the match.

Tottenham reached the semifinals of the Carabao Cup last season. They were knocked out of the competition by Chelsea in the final four. Conte will aim to get Spurs back into the semifinals, but he will need to get by Forest first.

Spurs have not played great on the road, with a 4W-3D-3L record in all competitions and a goal difference of –1. Nottingham Forest’s home record is 2W-2D-3L. They have a goal difference of –3 at the City Ground.

Conte should lead Tottenham to a win at the City Ground for the second time this season. Spurs should prevail 3-2 in a thriller away from home.
