Arsenal expected to flex their muscles against Brighton in League Cup showdown

There are seven all-Premier League ties in the third round of the EFL Cup. On Wednesday, high-flying Arsenal welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to the Emirates Stadium.

With just one round of league fixtures remaining before the World Cup, the Gunners find themselves at the summit of the top-flight table and will be confident of staying there.

As for Brighton, they sit sixth – 13 points behind the league leaders. Can the Seagulls cause a cup upset on Wednesday?

Arsenal head into this clash on the back of an impressive 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, racking up 14 attempts on their way to victory.

Mikel Arteta’s men have now won six of their last seven Premier League outings, as well as 11 of their previous 13.

Not only are the Gunners the second-highest scorers in the Premier League this term (31), but they also boast the joint-best defensive record in the division (11).

In terms of the League Cup, Arsenal have only lost one of their past six games in the competition. They last reached the final in 2018, with their last triumph coming in 1993.

Brighton came from 2-1 down to beat Wolves 2-3 on Saturday. The Seagulls racked up 72% possession and 19 shots at Molineux, with Pascal Gross netting the winner on 83 minutes.

Following a run of five Premier League games without a win, Brighton thrashed Chelsea 4-1 before sealing back-to-back wins against Wolves.

Back in August, the Seagulls kicked off their EFL Cup campaign with an easy 3-0 victory over Forest Green Rovers.

Given that Brighton were knocked out of the EFL Cup in the fourth round last term, they will surely be eager to go deeper into the competitions this season.

Head-to-head: Arsenal and Brighton have faced each other ten times since the Seagulls returned to the Premier League in 2017. Interestingly, the Gunners have only claimed three wins in that time.

All of the past ten meetings between Arsenal and Brighton have produced under 3.5 goals, with six of those dishing up under 2.5 goals.

Team news: Arsenal will be without the injured trio of Emile Smith Rowe, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Matt Turner on Wednesday.

Brighton have just the one injury absentee at the moment, with Polish midfielder Jakub Moder recovering from a cruciate ligament rupture.

Although Brighton appear to be finding their feet under their new manager, Arsenal should be too strong for the south coast side.

Forebet predicts that Arsenal will progress at Brighton’s expense. Both teams are likely to score, but the Gunners are expected to outscore the Seagulls.
