Tottenham Hotspur limp into Champions League matchday No. 5 on Wednesday night against Sporting CP. Spurs are on a two-game losing streak in the Premier League and in danger of falling out of the top four.
On Wednesday, Spurs have the chance to focus on European matches, as Sporting CP come to town. Sporting claimed a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture in Lisbon.
Much of the talk after the match was about former Spurs’ player Marcus Edwards shining in the fixture. The Englishman has four goals in all competitions this season for Sporting and could start once more against his former club.
Both Sporting goals in the reverse fixture were scored in the 90th minute despite their 2-0 win and perceived dominance. Spurs have not played to their full potential in the Champions League this season. Nor are they playing to their full potential in the Premier League.
Tottenham are top of Group D with seven points ahead of matchday No. 5. Sporting CP are third in the group with six points. After a strong start to the group stage, Sporting CP go into matchday No. 5 after back-to-back losses to Marseille in the group.
Sporting rebounded from their matchday No. 4 loss to Marseille with a 3-1 win against Casa Pia at the weekend in the Primeira. The win ended a two-game losing streak in all competitions.
Tottenham are unbeaten in back-to-back Champions League games. They drew nil-nil with Eintracht Frankfurt before defeating the Germans 3-2.
Spurs won both of their previous Champions League matches at home. However, they are winless on the road in the tournament’s group stage. Sporting CP went away to Frankfurt and won 3-0 to start the group stage but lost 4-1 at Marseille.
Ruben Amorim will be without Goncalves Pote and Ricardo Esgaio due to suspension on Wednesday. Midfielder Daniel Braganca and defender Luis Neto will also miss the game due to injuries.
Antonio Conte has four players that could miss the game. Forwards Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski are both doubts due to muscle injuries. Defender Cristian Romero has a calf strain, and midfielder Pierre Emile Hojbjerg has a thigh injury. Both are doubts to make the squad.
Spurs were shocked by Sporting in the reverse match. Tottenham won’t experience the same shock result this time around.
Conte should have Spurs ready for a third home win in the Champions League group stage. The Londoners should post a 2-1 win and qualify for the round of 16.
