Sixth and seventh in Ligue 1 will meet this weekend in arguably the biggest game of the season for Lille and Monaco as the 2020/21 champions of France play hosts to the latter at the Stade Pierre Mauroy with both sides eyeing up a spot in the European places before the break for the World Cup.

It’s been an up and down month during October for Monaco as they have managed to register some decent wins, while also looking very shaky at the back too.

The club managed to get hammered by Turkish side Trabzonspor in Europe two weeks back 4-0, and this came just one week after beating them 3-1at the Louis II Stadium.

In between these games in the Europa League, the French giants defeated Montpellier 2-0 in Ligue 1, but Monaco also drew 1-1 with Clermont Foot last weekend on home soil.

However, the club are still sitting ahead of their opposition here ahead of the game, but the 2017/18 champions of France are behind fourth-placed Marseille by two points and fifth-placed Rennes on just goals difference.

At the same time, with 20 goals scored, and only 14, Monaco sit with the same defensive record as second-placed Lorient.

Lille, on the other hand, have had a much smoother October as they eased past Strasbourg 3-0 last weekend not long after defeating third-placed Lens 1-0 - this remains Lens’ only loss in the league so far.

However, if Lille are to be considered a threat to the Champions League places, a victory here against Monaco is a must, despite looking so good in October.

If this is to happen, the excellent form of their star striker, Jonathan David, must carry on.

The Canadian has now scored nine times in Ligue 1 already this season to move level with Neymar at the top of the goalscoring chart in France, putting him one goal above Kylian Mbappe in the process and four ahead of Lionel Messi.

Lille have still managed to let in 18 goals so far this season, which is alarming given how this is just one goal less than 15th-placed Reims just outside of the relegation spots.

What’s more, although the form of David up top is extremely impressive, with 21 goals scored in total for Lille, he has now scored almost half of the goals they have netted in total in the league.

Forebet predicts a win for Monaco and for the game to see under 2.5 goals.
