PSG set to edge Juventus in Champions League curtain raiser

The 2022/23 UEFA Champions League gets underway this week. On Tuesday, we have a Group H blockbuster between Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus to get our teeth into.

PSG finished as runners-up in 2019/20 before reaching the semi-finals in 2020/21. However, they were knocked out in the round of 16 last season.

As for Juventus, they reached the Champions League final in 2014/15 and 2016/17. But they have failed to make it past the quarter-finals since then.

Can one of these giants of European football finally get their hands on the famous trophy this season? It’s time to take a look at the teams.

Let’s start with the hosts, PSG, who head into Tuesday’s clash on the back of a 3-0 victory over Nantes – with Kylian Mbappe bagging a brace.

The Ligue 1 champions have won five and drawn one of their six domestic games this term, taking 16 points from a possible 18.

Not only have PSG scored 24 goals in six Ligue 1 games this season (4 goals per game), but they have also conceded just four.

With Neymar (9 goals, 6 assists), Kylian Mbappe (7 goals, 0 assists), and Lionel Messi (4 goals, 6 assists) on fire right now, the Parisians will be difficult to stop.

On the flip side, Juventus were held to a 1-1 draw by Fiorentina last time out. It is worth noting that Juve saw just 40% possession and only managed one shot on target.

Although Juventus remain unbeaten in Serie A this season (2 wins, 3 draws), it’s fair to say that they have made an indifferent start to the campaign.

It is also worth pointing out that Juventus have drawn three of their previous four games, scoring just two goals across those three draws.

Only three players – Dusan Vlahovic (4), Angel Di Maria (1) and Arkadiusz Milik (1) – have scored for Juventus this season.

Head-to-head: Believe it or not, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus have never faced each other in the Champions League.

The two sides met in the International Champions Cup during the 2017 off-season, with Juventus winning 3-2 on that occasion.

Team news: PSG will be without right-back Timothee Pembele on Tuesday, as the 19-year-old continues to recover from a cruciate ligament injury.

Juve’s lengthy injury list contains Federico Chiesa, Kaio Jorge, Marley Ake, Paul Pogba, Leonardo Bonucci and Wojciech Szczesny.

With the home advantage on their side, PSG should have enough firepower to get the better of Juventus on Tuesday.

Forebet predicts that both teams will score. However, PSG are expected to outscore Juventus and claim all three points.
