Liverpool finally got their first win of the season on Premier League matchday No. 4. The Reds won emphatically, defeating Bournemouth 9-0 with Roberto Firmino scoring twice and assisting three goals.
Now, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds host Newcastle United at Anfield in a difficult midweek fixture. Liverpool still have a number of injury issues, but Eddie Howe goes into the game with several key players sidelined for Newcastle as well.
The Magpies are coming off of a come from behind 1-1 draw versus Wolverhampton at the weekend. Newcastle had no right to draw the game as little to nothing was created.
Yet, Allan Saint-Maximin's incredible volley from outside the box courtesy of a poor Wolves’ clearance gave the Magpies a point.
Newcastle go into matchday No. 5 with six points from 12 points available. It has been an okay start for Newcastle, but each of their last three games have ended in draws with Brighton, Man City, and Wolves.
Liverpool ended a three-match winless run to start the season with their victory of Bournemouth. Klopp will hope the team can continue their excellent form against Newcastle United.
Liverpool have a record of 4W-2D-0L in all competitions against Newcastle in the last six encounters.
In fact, Liverpool have not lost any of their last 10 matches versus Newcastle United in all competitions.
Last season, Liverpool did the double over Newcastle with a 3-1 home win and 1-0 away victory.
In the Premier League era, Liverpool have a record of 31W-12-11L versus the Magpies, outscoring the Geordies 109-57.
In the last 27 matches between these clubs at Anfield, Newcastle have won a mere one time, posting a miserable 1W-5D-21L record. The Magpies scored just 23 times compared to Liverpool’s 23 goals.
Goals could be at a premium for Newcastle as injuries could limit Howe from selecting his best side.
Striker Callum Wilson, two goals this season, is ruled out at the moment. Midfielder Bruno Guimaraes is a doubt due to a thigh strain. Guimaraes is needed to bully Liverpool’s midfield.
Kieran Trippier could be fit although he has a slight fitness worry. There is hope new striker Alexander Isak will be available but recent reports indicate he may not be able to suit up. Saint-Maximin could also miss the game. He is currently listed as a major doubt to play.
Klopp still has a massive injury list with around 10 first-team players expected to miss out. Expect a similar starting XI from Klopp as to the one that played versus Bournemouth.
The XI may be the same, but the result won’t be. Liverpool should concede goals this time with Newcastle coming away with a point at Anfield. This game could be an epic draw with eight goals shared four apiece.
