The German top flight is in action on Friday night and it features this upcoming clash between Freiburg and Bochum, two teams that have experienced differing starts to this new Bundesliga campaign, and both looking to further improve their points tally when they meet at the Europa-Park Stadion.
Freiburg have come out of the blocks in quick and impressive fashion and although Friday’s hosts suffered a 3-1 loss in between wins at home against Borussia Dortmund, the victories that Freiburg gained either side of this defeat against Augsburg and Stuttgart, will have made up for their understandable defeat.
Even more impressive is the fact that both of Freiburg’s wins were achieved on their travels but the hosts will be keen to set the record straight when they return to home soil for Friday night’s encounter.
The bigger picture shows Freiburg have lost just four out of their last 16 matches overall in the German top flight and although the hosts have lost their last two home games on the trot, Freiburg have won the previous two meetings on the trot against Bochum.
Onto Bochum, and the visitors have seemingly picked up where they left off at the end of last season’s Bundesliga campaign which is not a good thing as Bochum suffered a 3-2 loss away from home at Union Berlin on the final day of last term.
The visitors have also lost their opening three league games on the trot in this new Bundesliga season as well, incurring losses against Mainz, Hoffenheim and Bayern Munich, the latter being a particularly heavy 7-0 thrashing at the hands of the perennial champions, and one which will have done little for Bochum’s fragile confidence too.
Bochum finished last season in 13th place but early indications this term suggest this season could prove to be an even tougher assignment for Thomas Reis’s side, especially as they have now lost their last four Bundesliga matches on the trot and have shipped a total of 15 goals in the process.
Wins on the road have been sporadic at best as Bochum have collected a meagre four wins from their last 25 outings on their travels, which also includes no fewer than 16 defeats as well.
Freiburg therefore look the more likely to grab the all-important three points here and extend Bochum’s early season woes.
