Elche to take the spoils versus Almeria
Elche CF vs UD Almería - 22/08/2022
3815
Newly-promoted Almeria head to Elche in what could be a six-point game come the end of the campaign. Elche battled relegation last season before finishing 13th with 42 points from 38 matches.
Almeria gained promotion to La Liga at the end of last season.
Los Rojiblancos and Elche have split the last six game in thirds with two wins apiece, two draws apiece, and two losses apiece. These teams last met in the 2021-22 Copa del Rey with Elche claiming a 2-1 win. Elche are unbeaten in three straight games versus Almeria.
Despite having good form against Almeria, Elche have started the La Liga season poorly. The Green Striped Ones lost 3-0 at Real Betis on opening day.
Almeria also lost to start off the new season. After leading league champions Real Madrid early on, Almeria could not hold the lead and dropped to a 2-1 loss.
Coach Rubi has no new injuries at Almeria heading into the match on Monday night. While Almeria have a fully fit squad, Elche do not.
Coach Francisco will be without midfielder John Donald Chetauya due to a red card suspension. Defender Gonzalo Verdu is ruled out until September with a groin strain. Forward Jony Alamo is out long-term with a meniscus injury.
Last season, Elche won more than half of their points (27 out of 42 points) at home. The Green Striped Ones made excellent use of their home-field advantage. Elche are likely to do it once more.
Elche were busy in the transfer market signing Roger Mari from Levante, Pol Lirola from Marseille, and Ezequiel Ponce from CSKA Moscow.
On paper, Elche should be a stronger side than last season. Francisco favours a 3-4-3 formation and should deploy it again this weekend.
Almeria splashed as much cash as possible in the offseason to sign centre-back Kaiky. He cost over £6 million. Fernando Pacheco joined from Alaves and striker Marko Milovanovic joined up from Partizan Belgrade.
Manager Rubi likes to play a 5-3-2 formation with two strikers playing close together. Largie Ramazani started in attack on matchday No. 1 and scored Almeria’s only goal against Real Madrid.
Games between these sides have been even in their last six head-to-head meetings. Elche are on a two-game winning streak and the Green Striped Ones should post a third straight win against Almeria in all competitions.
Elche’ signings look promising and they may lead to the side not fighting relegation this term. The Green Striped Ones should post a 2-1 home win.
