Olympiakos favourites in Greece over Slovan Bratislava

The 3rd qualifying round of the Europa League also commences this week and the 1st leg ties of these fixtures features this upcoming clash between Greek hosts, Olympiakos, and their Slovakian visitors, Slovan Bratislava.

The two sides battle it out for a place in the group stage of this competition.

The Stadio Georgios Karaiskáki is the venue for Thursday’s 1st leg encounter and although Olympiakos were recently bundled out of the Champions League, falling victim to Israeli side, Maccabi Haifa, 5-1 on aggregate.

The hosts will still feel they have a decent chance of making the group stage in the Europa League.

Since the end of last season’s Greek Super League season in mid-May, Olympiakos have had an extended pre-season which encompassed some eight games prior to their Champions League exit and yielded just two victories.

But results on home soil in the Europa League have been reasonable enough.

Olympiakos have won four of their last seven home ties in this competition with victories over PSV, Slovan Bratislava (3-0), Antwerp and Fenerbahce, so the hosts have plenty of reason to be upbeat here.

Slovan Bratislava were also sent out of the Champions League in the qualifying rounds despite an early victory over Georgian club, Dinamo Batumi, winning in a penalty shoot-out, only to lose 5-3 on aggregate to Hungarian side, Ferencvaros, in the next qualifying round.

Having managed to collect just four wins out of their last 11 matches in all competitions, Slovan Bratislava are by no means a guaranteed result in Greece on Thursday night especially on the Europa League stage where the visitors have managed to muster just one win from their previous 10 ties overall.

This poor run of results consist of six defeats, one of which was the aforementioned 3-0 loss away at Thursday’s hosts, Olympiakos, when these two teams last met back in August of last year in the Europa League play-offs.

In addition, Slovan Bratislava have won just one of their last seven outings on the road in this competition which includes no fewer than five defeats with losses incurred on the road at PAOK, Wolves, Besiktas, KuPS and of course, Olympiakos.

Indeed, Olympiakos have won three of the previous four meetings against Slovan Bratislava and this trend looks set to continue on Thursday evening.
