Millwall to overcome plucky Cambridge Utd in cup clash
2075

Tuesday night brings us the opening fixture of this season’s League Cup and features this clash between League One outfit, Cambridge United, and their Championship counterparts, Millwall, when the two teams face off at Abbey Stadium for the right to be in the hat for the draw for the 2nd round of this domestic cup competition.

Both sides met in the 2nd round of this competition last season, with Millwall winning 3-1 on home soil at The Den, but on Tuesday night, Cambridge United will be hoping that home advantage and another season in League One under their belts will be the difference at Abbey Stadium.

In spite of pre-season expectations, Mark Bonner's side finished 14th in the third tier of English football after the aforementioned loss to the Lions last season and The U’s made a promising start to the new League One campaign on Saturday as they recorded an impressive 1-0 win at home over highly fancied MK Dons.

Cambridge are likely to be without forward Okenabirhie due to an achilles tendon injury but there are no other injury concerns for this 1st leg tie.

Onto Millwall, and they too registered an opening day win in Saturday’s Championship curtain-raiser against Stoke City as The Lions picked up all three points with a 2-0 home win at The Den to move the London club to the top of the table.

Getting the club promoted to the Premier League for the first time in its history will be manager Gary Rowett's priority this season, but making an impact in the EFL Cup would be a nice bonus for his side as they look to make their mark in the early stages of this new term.

Even though he will likely freshen up things ahead of a trip to Sheffield United this weekend, Rowett will be fully aware of the challenge awaiting his players on Tuesday night and will be urging his players not to take their hosts lightly.

With no injury concerns affecting Millwall, Rowett is likely to make several changes as well, with the likes of new signing forward Flemming pushing for a starting place alongside midfielder Saville and fellow forward Bennett.

Millwall are the obvious favourites for this cup tie and should progress to the next round of this domestic cup competition.
