Basel to see off Servette on Swiss Sunday
2172

The new Swiss Super League got underway last weekend and both Basel and Servette picked up points on the opening day of the new term but Basel picked up just the one point following a 1-1 draw away from home at Winterthur.

So the hosts will be keen to go one step better this Sunday when they return to their St. Jakob-Park.

Basel finished runners-up in last season’s Super League campaign but in truth they were a long way behind the title-winners, Zurich, as no fewer than 14 points separated the two teams by the end of the season.

Nevertheless, Basel qualified for the Europa Conference League as they finished with a steady sequence of results which saw the hosts lose just two of their final 10 matches of the term in all competitions.

Indeed, Basel have been handed just the one loss in their last 14 matches overall and that was to the eventual title winners, Zurich, but with five wins and eight draws, Basel have certainly made themselves a tough unit to beat in recent times.

Servette ended last season in a creditable mid-table position of 6th place and although they found themselves a significant 16 points adrift of a top three finish in the Super League, they also had a useful four-point buffer above the relegation play-off spot so all in all, it was a steady campaign for the visitors.

A similar pattern could unfold again for Servette this season as they hold their own against the teams around them in the division.

But encounters such as this Sunday’s one away at Basel could pose a few problems for them.

Nevertheless, Servette opened their account in last week’s first home game of the season with a 1-0 home win over St Gallen which will give the visitors a welcome boost ahead of Sunday’s clash although that result did end a previously worrying run of seven league games without a win.

Servette had previously suffered four defeats to the likes of Grasshopper, Young Boys, St Gallen and Luzern, and this trip to Basel could also be a tough one.

Basel have been unbeaten in each of the previous five meetings against Servette and this trend looks set to continue on Sunday as the hosts look to produce a winning start at home.
