HJK to get the nod at Ilves

The Finnish top flight action continues this Saturday lunchtime with a Veikkausliiga top six clash between 6th placed hosts, Ilves, and their 2nd placed visitors, HJK, at the Ratinan Stadion with both teams keen to further improve their respective positions in the domestic top flight table.

Ilves currently occupy the last spot for the Championship Round once the regular season has finished.

But there is still a long way to go before the second phase kicks in but nevertheless, recent results will have encouraged Ilves as the hosts have lost just two of their last eight matches overall in the Veikkausliiga.

This solid sequence of results also include wins against Mariehamn, Lahti and HIFK, while form and results on home soil at their Ratinan Stadion have also been promising in recent times with Ilves winning four out of their last six games in their own back yard.

The bigger picture shows Ilves have lost just six of their last 19 matches at home in the Finnish top flight and this statistic alone gives the hosts plenty of encouragement ahead of Saturday’s date with HJK.

Onto HJK and the visitors will be keen to put their midweek disappointment behind them as quickly as possible as they prepare for this upcoming Veikkausliiga clash at the Ratinan Stadion following a 2-1 loss at home to Viktoria Plzen in the 1st leg of their 2nd qualifying round tie in the Champions League.

This midweek defeat put an end to a previous three-match winning streak which saw HJL collect wins against Latvian outfit, Rigas, in home and away wins but HJK had to endure a tense penalty shoot-out in order to progress in the competition.

HJK then registered a 3-1 home win over VPS in last weekend’s Veikkausliiga action but they now face a tricky trip to face Ilves who have been no pushovers so far in this season’s campaign.

That victory against VPS ended a run of four matches without a win though for HJK who had previously been held to draws by KuPS (home and away), along with suffering disappointing losses to 4th placed Oulu and third from bottom club, Mariehamn as well.

HJK’s results away from home though could help seal the deal for the visitors in this clash as they’ve lost just once in their last 13 outings on the road.
