Atlanta United and Orlando City set for tight MLS clash
1976

Week 21 of the 2022 Major League Soccer season goes down this weekend. On Sunday, Atlanta United welcome Orlando City to Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The two sides are separated by six points in the Eastern Conference standings, with fifth-place Orlando leading eleventh-place Atlanta. However, the Five Stripes have a game in hand.

With Orlando seven points behind first-place Philadelphia and Atlanta five points clear of last-place DC United, the result of this clash could have a big impact on both ends of the table.

Atlanta picked up a much-needed victory in midweek, beating Real Salt Lake 2-1 thanks to a brace from Ronaldo Cisneros.

The Five Stripes had only managed to claim one win in eight games before beating RSL, so the importance of Wednesday’s victory cannot be overstated.

Still, there is no hiding the fact that Atlanta have won just six of their 19 MLS games this season – recording five draws and eight defeats in the process.

On a brighter note, the Georgians have only lost two of their previous 17 home games in Major League Soccer. That record will give them confidence ahead of Sunday’s showdown.

As for Orlando, they were held to a 1-1 draw by Colorado in midweek. Despite racking up 12 shots, they were unable to claim all three points.

Thanks to recent victories over Inter Miami and Nashville SC, the Lions have only lost one of their past four encounters across all competitions.

That said, they have lost two of their previous four Major League Soccer clashes – falling to Cincinnati and DC United in recent weeks.

Given that each of Orlando’s last three away matches in MLS have dished up under 2.5 goals, a low-scoring game is expected on Sunday.

Head-to-head: Atlanta have only managed to win one of their last seven meetings with Orlando, recording three draws and three losses in that time.

When you look at the bigger picture, however, Orlando have won just three of their previous 15 MLS matches against the Five Stripes.

Team news: Atlanta are currently missing a number of key players due to injury, including goalkeeper Brad Guzan and centre-back Miles Robinson.

Orlando will be without the injured Mason Stajduhar this weekend, although they are hopeful that Joao Moutinho will be fit enough to feature.

Atlanta and Orlando have both been wildly unpredictable this year, so Sunday’s clash is destined to be a tight encounter between two inconsistent sides.

With that in mind, Forebet predicts that Atlanta and Orlando will play out a draw in Georgia. Both teams are expected to score, but we aren’t like to see too many goals.
