High-flying Gimnasia should make light work of Colon

Gimnasia will be looking to keep pace with Newell’s Old Boys atop the Argentine Primera Division when they welcome Colon to the Juan Carmelo Zerillo Stadium on Saturday.

As we head into Round 8, Gimnasia sit second in the standings – one point behind and Newell’s and level with third-place Huracan on 14 points.

Meanwhile, Colon find themselves down in seventeenth place – four points off the bottom and six points behind Gimnasia.

Gimnasia have only lost one of their seven Argentine Primera Division games this term, picking up four wins and two draws in the process.

After kicking off their campaign with a six-game unbeaten streak, Gimnasia suffered their first defeat of the season at the weekend – losing 2-0 to Atletico Tucuman.

However, it is worth noting that last weekend’s loss was Gimnasia first defeat in 13 matches across all competitions. During that period, they collected ten victories.

When you look at the bigger picture, Gimnasia have lost only two of their previous 16 Argentine Primera Division clashes on home soil.

As for Colon, they have only managed to win two of their seven league outings this season – registering two draws and three defeats along the way.

With six goals to their name, they are among the lowest scorers in the division. In fact, only four sides have a poorer offensive record.

It is worth pointing out, however, that Colon ended a run of five losses and one draw with a 2-1 victory over Velez Sarsfield last time out.

Given that each of Colon’s past three Argentine Primera Division away trips have dished up under 2.5 goals, we are likely to see a low-scoring encounter on Saturday.

Head-to-head: Across the past eight meetings between Gimnasia and Colon, both sides have claimed four wins.

Three of the previous five meetings between Gimnasia and Colon have produced under 2.5 goals, highlighting the low-scoring nature of this fixture.

Team news: Gimnasia will be without injured forward Nicola Contin on Saturday as he continues to recover from a cruciate ligament rupture.

On the flip side, Colon are injury-free at the moment – meaning head coach Sergio Rondina has a full-strength squad at his disposal.

Although the recent head-to-head record between these two sides is even, there is no hiding the fact that Gimnasia are enjoying a far better season than Colon.

With that in mind, Forebet predicts that Gimnasia will secure a clean-sheet victory over Colon this weekend. Under 1.5 goals are expected.
