Zenit Expected to Win the Super Cup by a Narrow Margin Over Spartak Moscow

Zenit St. Petersburg and Spartak Moscow will meet in the Russian Super Cup final at the Krestovsky Stadium with the winners of the league meeting the Russian Cup victors this Saturday evening.

Despite the gargantuan status of Spartak and their usual efforts to get within the top four at least, their excellent run to win the Russian Cup was met with one of their worst efforts in the league in recent history.

The Moscow side ended up finishing just six points above the drop zone in the 2021/22 season after 30 games, with them letting in a dreadful record of 41 goals and scoring just 37 of their own.

What's more, for the first time in the past decade, Spartak lost more than they won, as they registered only 10 wins from 30 games, with 12 defeats coming their way after also registering eight draws.

It meant the club finished an almighty 27 points behind first place, with them even sitting 12 points adrift of fifth-placed rivals CSKA Moscow, in a season that was also very underwhelming for them.

Spartak now find themselves as huge underdogs to get the result they want here, but nevertheless, despite the torrid form in the league, they were excellent in the Russian Cup.

The run started with a fantastic 6-1 victory over Kuban, before then beating rivals CSKA on their own patch 1-0. They then eased past Yenisey in the semi-finals to set up a final with Dynamo Moscow in an all-Moscow affair once more.

Aleksandr Sobolev and Quincy Promes scored a goal each in the final, and deep into extra time, Daniil Fomin of Dynamo missed a penalty to hand Spartak the Russian Cup. They ended up conceding just two goals along the way to winning the trophy, scoring 12 of their own.

As for Zenit, it was another stunning performance from start to finish for them in the league, and they ended up winning the league by a nine-point margin over PFC Sochi. This came after losing only three of the 30 scheduled games, with them scoring 66 times and letting in just 28 goals.

Zenit will also take confidence from the last time these two met back in the Russian Premier League, with the league champions smashing Spartak 7-1 with five different goalscorers getting in on the act, as Promes scored once more for his side.

Forebet predicts a win for Zenit here, and for the game to see under 2.5 goals.
