Girona tipped to earn first-leg advantage over Tenerife in Segunda Division play-offs
6247

On Saturday night, Girona and Tenerife will be looking to enhance their promotion hopes when they meet in the first leg of the Segunda Division play-off final.

Fifth-place Tenerife and sixth-place Girona finished just one point apart in the table, so there is very little to separate the teams ahead of Saturday’s showdown.

Girona booked their place in the play-off final with a 2-1 aggregate victory over Eibar, who finished 12 points ahead of Girona in third place.

Following a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of their semi-final, Girona secured a 2-0 win at Eibar to punch their ticket to the final.

It’s fair to say that Girona are enduring an indifferent spell at the moment, having lost five of their previous ten games.

They have also managed to win just two of their last six outings, registering one draw and three losses along the way.

That said, Girona will fancy their chances of getting past Tenerife, as only three teams picked up more regular-season wins.

On the flip side, Tenerife booked their spot in the play-off final after recording a 3-1 aggregate victory over Las Palmas in the semi-finals.

Despite seeing just 27% possession in the first leg, Tenerife claimed a 1-0 win thanks to Jose Leon’s first-half strike.

Remarkably, they saw only 23% of the ball during the second leg but managed to win 2-1 thanks to a brace from Enric Gallego.

It is worth noting that Tenerife lost their final three regular-season games, falling to Malaga, Eibar and Cartagena while scoring just one goal in the process.

When you look at the bigger picture, however, Tenerife have won six of their previous ten Segunda Division encounters.

Head-to-head: Interestingly, Tenerife have already beaten Girona twice this season – winning 2-1 at home before sealing a 1-0 away victory.

Girona have only managed to win one of their previous five meetings with Tenerife, suffering four defeats along the way.

Team news: It feels like Girona’s hopes of promotion rest on Christhian Stuani, who has scored 23 goals across all competitions this season.

With Pablo Larrea out injured, Tenerife will be relying on Elady Zorrilla and Enric Gallego to score the goals on Saturday.

This is destined to be a tight clash between two evenly matched teams. However, Girona are expected to use their home advantage to gain a slender first-leg lead.

Forebet predicts that Girona will notch a low-scoring victory over Tenerife, keeping a clean sheet in the process.
