Belarus and Azerbaijan to share the spoils

Monday night brings us further action from the Nations League and a League C Group 3 clash between Belarus and Azerbaijan at the Stadion Karađorđe with both teams looking to further their promotion ambitions up to League B.
However, Belarus were dealt a 1-0 defeat at home against Slovakia in their Group 3 opener on Friday night so the hosts will be eager to set the record straight when they play host to Azerbaijan on Monday night.
Following a somewhat disastrous World Cup qualifying campaign which resulted with Belarus ending up bottom of Group E having lost seven of their eight games throughout the group phase and winning just once, Belarus had put together three wins on the trot.
A 4-2 home win over Estonia unfortunately wasn’t the catalyst for further success as Belarus were then handed seven defeats on the trot which included defeats at home to Wales, Belgium and Czech Republic.
But three wins on the trot in international friendlies against Jordan, India and Bahrain should still give Belarus confidence that they can secure a result of some sort on Monday evening.
Azerbaijan were also handed a loss in their Nations League opener away from home against Kazakhstan on Friday afternoon, losing 2-0, and the visitors will be hitting the road again on Monday night when they travel to Belarus to face their hosts at the Stadion Karađorđe.
And although they’ve had the better of previous exchanges against Belarus, current form suggests they could have their work cut out here.
Azerbaijan are without a win in their last 10 matches in all competitions, a poor sequence of results that include no fewer than eight defeats and indeed, the bigger picture shows that the visitors have managed to collect just one win from their last 20 matches overall.
That rare success came in the form of a 2-1 win away from home at Monday’s opponents, Belarus, but 13 defeats within this period indicate Azerbaijan’s vulnerability on the international stage, while just one victory in their previous 12 outings underline the problems they’ve had on their travels.
With both teams heading into match day 2 on the back of defeats, neither side will want to lose a second game on the trot so a stalemate could be on the cards here.
