Montenegro will start their UEFA Nations Leage B Group 3 journey on Saturday versus Romania. The League B teams are joined by Finland and Bosnia and Herzegovina in Group 3.
The four-team group will be difficult to navigate. There are some strong teams in the group and any one of them could progress to League A.
Montenegro are up to No. 70 in the world, which is two places higher than in March. Head coach Miodrag Radulović will hope the team can continue moving up the rankings.
Despite moving up to No. 70 in the world, Montenegro did not have a good 2021. They posted a record of 1W-3D-4L in World Cup qualifying and friendlies combined. This year, Montenegro have played twice posting a 1-0 loss against Armenia and a 1-0 win versus Greece. Both were friendlies.
Edward Iordănescu’s Romania are now ranked 48th in the world. They moved down one place in March. Romania had a strong 2021 despite missing out on World Cup qualification. They posted a record of 4W-2D-3L.
Romania did not start 2022 in good form, however. The Romanians lost 1-0 to Greece and drew 2-2 with Israel.
A number of Montenegro players are domestic based. The remainder of the squad compete in leagues outside of the top five leagues in Europe.
Hertha Berlin striker Stevan Jovetic is the captain of the squad and the biggest name in the team. However, Jovetic is now 32 and has been robbed of many years of top-level football due to injuries.
Romania’s squad is similar to Montenegro’s in terms of quality. They won’t have Rangers playmaker Ianis Hagi. The midfielder suffered a serious knee injury during the season and is still recovering.
A large number of players are domestic based. Sassuolo Defender Vlad Chiriches will wear the captain’s armband. Cagliari midfielder Razvan Marin will likely start in the centre of the park along with Alexandru Maxim.
Montenegro do not have a strong head-to-head record against Romania. The Montenegrins have a record of 1W-2D-2L. These teams met in the 2018-19 Nations League tournament with Romania picking up a draw and won, respectively.
This time around, Montenegro should be up for the test against Romania. Playing at home will help especially with Romania winless in their last two international matches.
Montenegro should pick up a win by a 2-0 scoreline and set themselves up for a battle for first place in the group.
