Malmo to take Cup final honours against Hammarby

It’s taken almost a calendar year to complete, but the Swedish Cup (or Svenska Cupen) final features on Thursday afternoon in an all-Allsvenskan clash between Hammarby and Malmo at the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm in what is essentially a home game for Hammarby.
The first round fixtures of this domestic cup competition began last year in early June but both Hammarby and Malmo entered the competition at the 2nd round stage where Hammarby recorded a comfortable 3-1 win away from home at Hudiksvall, while Malmo registered a convincing 5-1 home win over Onsala.
The group phase then followed with Hammarby finishing top of Group E which also comprised of Hacken, Falkenberg and Ytterhogdal, with Hammarby recording a 100% winning record to progress through to the quarter-final stage.
Victories over Falkenberg 2-1, Ytterhogdal 6-1 and a 4-0 romp over Hacken, saw Hammarby breeze through the group stage to take their place in the quarter-finals.
A 3-2 home win over Norrkoping was followed by a semi-final 1-0 home win over Elfsborg to send Hammarby into the cup final where they’ll meet Malmo but Hammarby have won just once in their last four games overall.
Malmo also finished top of their respective group in the second phase of this Svenska Cupen as they topped Group A with a 100% winning record, beating the likes of GAIS 5-1, Angelholm 5-1 and Varnamo 2-0, to progress through to the knockout stages of the competition.
The quarter-final stage saw Malmo pit their wits against AIK whom they eventually got the better of after extra-time, Malmo winning the cup-tie 3-2 to progress through to the semi-finals.
A narrow 1-0 win away at Djurgarden saw Malmo through to another domestic cup final in a competition which has seen Malmo win their last seven cup ties on the trot.
While Hammarby have won their last 13 cup games on the trot.
However, Malmo have lost just once in the previous four meetings against Hammarby and they look the more likely to gain the upper hand in what promises to be an intriguing Svenska Cupen final on Thursday afternoon.
