Brest to put up stubborn fight against Strasbourg
Stade Brestois vs Strasbourg - 07/05/2022
2321
The French Ligue 1 action continues on Saturday with this upcoming clash in Ligue 1 between mid-table hosts, Brest, and their high-flying 6th placed visitors, Strasbourg, when the two teams meet at the Stade Francis-Le Blé with the hosts seeking a fourth league win on the trot.
Brest have lifted themselves up into the relative comfort and safety of 11th place in the Ligue 1 ladder thanks to picking up three wins on the trot in recent weeks with victories gained over the likes of Lyon 2-1, Metz 1-0 and last weekend’s 2-0 home win over Clermont.
Although Brest have nowhere to go as a top five finish is now out of the question (being 12 points behind 5th placed outfit, Nice), but also in no danger of being relegated (as they possess a strong 17-point cushion over third from bottom side, St Etienne), Brest can now relax and play with freedom which may well suit the hosts.
Form and results on home soil have also been reasonable as Brest have lost just four of their last 13 home games, picking up seven wins in the process.
Despite sitting in 6th place and three points behind 5th placed Nice, Saturday’s visitors, Strasbourg, have it all to do.
And they know they simply cannot afford another slip-up in Ligue 1 if they’re to achieve a 5th place finish.
A 3-3 draw at home with PSG last time out was a solid result for Strasbourg who have suffered just the single defeat in their previous 13 games overall in Ligue 1.
But although this sequence includes five wins as well, Strasbourg have also been involved in no fewer than seven draws as well in this period.
One too many stalemates may well have cost Strasbourg valuable ground on the top five pack in the French top flight and it’s a familiar theme when looking at Strasbourg’s results away from home too.
The visitors are without a win in their last five outings on the road, a sequence of results that consist of four draws and a defeat.
Points picked up in draws at St Etienne, Reims, Lorient and Troyes have been overshadowed by a 1-0 loss at Lille, so Brest appear to have every chance of getting something out of this encounter by way of the handicap on offer.
