Fiorentina seeking Serie A double over Udinese

Fiorentina will host Udinese at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Wednesday night. Vincenzo Italiano’s team sits seventh in the table ahead of a midweek fixture. Udinese are down the table in 12th place.

This is a match in hand for both clubs with the Serie A season goes down to the wire. La Viola are a mere two points off of fifth-place Roma for direct qualification to the Europa League.

Udinese are winless in back-to-back Serie A games heading into the fixture. The Zebrette are midtable and safe from relegation, but they are nowhere near the European qualification places.

Fiorentina suffered a shock 2-1 loss to Salernitana at the weekend. The loss ended a three-match winning streak in Serie A. Udinese, on the other hand, drew 2-2 with Bologna at the weekend.

Italiano’s Fiorentina won the reverse Serie A fixture against Udinese. Fiorentina picked up a 1-0 win thanks to a penalty from Dusan Vlahovic.

Fiorentina are on a 14-match winning streak versus Udinese in all competitions. La Viola won 3-2 against Udinese at home last season.

La Viola have the league’s second-best home points total in 2021-22 with 35 points from 16 matches. The Stadio Artemio Franchi has been a fortress for the club this season. Each of Fiorentina‘s last five home matches ended without a loss. Four of their last five games at home ended as wins.

Italiano has two players on the Fiorentina injury list as midfielder Lucas Torreira and midfielder Gaetano Castrovilli are both unlikely to play due to injuries. Torreira will be a big miss due to his five goals in 27 matches. Since Dusan Vlahovic left the club in January, Torreira leads the team in scoring.

Udinese coach Gabriele Cioffi was hired a first-team coach on December 7. Results have been good under Cioffi and it could lead him to receiving a new contract.

Zebrette midfielder Roberto Pereyra has a muscle injury and is unlikely to play. Forward Beto has a hamstring strain but could return to the team. Goalkeeper Antonio Santurro is a doubt to play following a meniscus injury.

Fiorentina are two points behind Roma heading into the Wednesday night clash. A win would send them into fifth place and ahead of the Giallorossi. A victory would also put Fiorentina into the driver’s seat to finish fifth with four matches left to play in Serie A.

One of Fiorentina’s last four fixtures will be a massive Europa League qualification six-pointer versus Roma.
