PSG tipped to edge out Strasbourg in high-scoring thriller

Fresh from claiming their eighth Ligue 1 title in ten years, Paris Saint-Germain kick off Round 35 with a trip to Champions League chasers Strasbourg on Friday night.

Despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Lens last weekend, PSG clinched the Ligue 1 crown after opening up an unassailable 13-point lead over second-place Marseille.

Meanwhile, Strasbourg find themselves sixth – one point shy of the European places and three points outside the Champions League spots.

Last season, Strasbourg finished just two points clear of the relegation zone. This time around, they are in contention for a top-five finish.

Having lost eight of their 34 Ligue 1 games this term, only two sides – PSG and Marseille – have suffered fewer defeats than Strasbourg in 2021-22.

Strasbourg’s 11-game unbeaten streak – five wins and six draws – was finally brought to an end by a 1-0 loss to Lille last weekend.

Still, it is worth noting that Strasbourg have only suffered three defeats in their previous 23 Ligue 1 encounters.

As for PSG, they have lost just four of their 34 league matches this season – picking up 24 wins and six draws in the process.

Not only are Maurico Pochettino’s men the highest scorers in the league (76), but they also boast the second-best defensive record (31).

When you look at the bigger picture, the Parisians have only lost four of their previous 41 Ligue 1 matches.

Although Lionel Messi has racked up nine goals and 13 assists in all competitions this season, there is no denying that Kylian Mbappe has been the star of the show.

Mbappe has bagged a whopping 33 goals and 22 assists this term, including 22 goals and 15 assists in 31 Ligue 1 appearances.

Head-to-head: PSG are unbeaten in their previous seven league meetings with Strasbourg, having recorded five wins and two draws since their last loss.

Across the past seven Ligue 1 matches between PSG and Strasbourg, PSG have scored over 3.5 goals on four occasions.

Team news: Strasbourg look set to be without injured centre-back Ismael Doukoure on Friday as he continues to recover from a patella tendon issue.

Meanwhile, PSG are currently without the injured duo of Leandro Paredes (abductor) and Julian Draxler (knee).

Regardless of Strasbourg’s recent rise, PSG are expected to outscore their hosts in a high-scoring thriller on Friday night.

Forebet predicts that both teams will score over 1.5 goals. However, PSG should have enough firepower to come out on top.
