Monaco to claim the points at lowly St Etienne
AS Saint-Etienne vs AS Monaco - 23/04/2022
2696
The French top flight action continues on Saturday evening with the upcoming clash between lowly St Etienne and 6th placed Monaco at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard with both teams requiring all three points to boost their respective bids to avoid relegation and achieve a possible top five finish in Ligue 1.
St Etienne ended a dismal run of four games without a win in Ligue 1 last time out when they recorded a welcome and desperately needed three points in the shape of a 2-1 home win against Brest following draws with Lille and Troyes along with having suffered defeats against Marseille and Lorient in heavy 4-2 and 6-2 losses respectively.
That win over Brest has helped lift St Etienne out of the bottom three though in the French top flight table where they hold a slender one point cushion over third from bottom outfit, Clermont, ahead of this tough looking clash at home with Monaco on Saturday evening despite holding home advantage.
The bigger picture shows St Etienne have won just four of their last 18 home games.
Monaco occupy 6th place in Ligue 1 but find themselves level on points with 5th placed Strasbourg ahead of this upcoming trip to Stade Geoffroy-Guichard against a struggling St Etienne outfit.
And the visitors will be in confident mood having collected four wins on the trot in recent times in the domestic top flight.
Victories chalked up against PSG (3-0 at home), Metz, Troyes and 3rd placed Rennes will have certainly given Monaco a welcome and timely boost to their ambitions of securing a European spot for next season, while also losing just twice in their last 10 matches overall.
Results on the road still require further attention though as Monaco have won just six of their 16 away games to date this term.
But recent results have been more encouraging from the visitors’ point of view as Monaco have won three out of their last four matches on their travels with victories achieved at Marseille, Metz and Rennes.
Monaco have also held the upper hand in previous exchanges against their hosts as they have won the previous two meetings on the trot against St Etienne and a third win on the trot looks to be on the cards here this Saturday.
