Almeria to go top with win over Gijon
UD Almería vs Sporting Gijón - 25/04/2022
2943
There’s also action from the Spanish second tier on Monday night when automatic promotion hopefuls, Almeria, take on lowly Sporting Gijon, at their Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos with the hosts looking for all three points which could take them to the top of the La Liga 2 table.
After having had to endure a torrid start to the new year which saw Almeria lose four of their opening five league games of 2022 with defeats incurred against FC Cartagena, Lugo, Eibar and Real Oviedo, Almeria have since staged a recovery which has seen the hosts lose just a further two matches in the subsequent 11 matches thereafter.
Losses to Real Zaragoza and Girona have been outweighed by capturing six wins during this period with victories registered against Ibiza, Malaga, Mirandes, Fuenlabrada, Tenerife and Ponferradina, and these wins have helped Almeria into one of the two automatic promotion spots in La Liga 2.
Results on home soil have also improved as Almeria have lost just one of their last six home games whilst also picking up four wins, so the hosts will be upbeat about their prospects here on Monday evening.
By contrast, Sporting Gijon find themselves languishing in the lower reaches of the Spanish second tier table as the visitors occupy 17th place but they do hold a useful seven-point buffer above the relegation zone.
This is perhaps just as well, as Sporting Gijon have managed to capture just one win out of their last nine matches overall in La Liga 2.
It came in the form of a resounding 4-1 win against FC Cartagena but it should be noted that this landslide victory was recorded on home soil at their Estadio Municipal El Molinón.
However, five defeats within this nine-game period have overshadowed Gijon’s solitary win as the visitors have slipped to losses against Ponferradina, Real Zaragoza, Real Sociedad B, Tenerife and Real Oviedo, while wins on the road have also been hard to come by for Sporting Gijon.
The visitors have registered just two away wins from their last 16 outings on their travels and they look to have their work cut out here as well.
Almeria have won three out of the last four meetings against Sporting Gijon and the hosts stand a decent chance of extending this trend on Monday night.
