Burnley and Southampton braced for cagey encounter at Turf Moor

Burnley and Southampton will wrap up the midweek action in the Premier League when they go head-to-head at Turf Moor on Thursday night.

With seven games remaining this season, Burnley sit eighteenth in the Premier League table – three points from safety.

Meanwhile, Southampton find themselves in twelfth place – 14 points ahead of Burnley. The south coast side are set for another mid-table finish.

Following the surprise sacking of Sean Dyche, Burnley kicked off a new era with a 1-1 draw against West Ham United last weekend.

Wout Weghorst converted the Clarets’ solitary shot on target at the London Stadium before Tomas Soucek equalized to deny the visitors all three points.

Not only have Burnley registered the fewest Premier League wins this season (4), but they have also recorded the joint-most draws in the division (13).

Although six teams have suffered more defeats that Burnley this term, they find themselves in the relegation zone due to their inability to turn draws into wins.

Given that Burnley have won just five of their past 38 games in all competitions, they will need to perform a minor miracle in order to beat the drop.

On the flip side, Southampton head into Thursday’s clash on the back of an impressive 1-0 victory over Arsenal.

Despite seeing just 24% possession and facing 23 shots last weekend, the Saints managed to rack up nine shots of their own – with Jan Bednarek grabbing the goal.

That victory ended a five-game winless run for Southampton, which saw them register one draw and four losses between early March and early April.

That said, the Saints have only managed to win four of their previous 28 away games in the Premier League. For that reason, they should struggle to claim all three points at Turf Moor.

Head-to-head: Southampton are currently enjoying a three-game unbeaten streak in this fixture, having picked up two wins and one draw since their last loss against Burnley.

Since both teams have scored in four of the past six meetings between Burnley and Southampton, we are likely to see action at both ends on Thursday.

Team news: Burnley will be without Ashley Westwood on Thursday after he suffered a nasty injury last time out. Ben Mee is also unavailable through injury.

Southampton have no fresh injury worries, although goalkeeper Alex McCarthy remains a doubt for the trip to Burnley.

Although Burnley are fighting for Premier League survival, Southampton are more than capable of claiming a point on Thursday.

Forebet predicts that Burnley and Southampton will play out a draw, with both teams getting on the scoresheet.
