In Saturday afternoon’s clash at the Stadio Pierluigi Penzo, another important encounter will unfold between relegation threatened Venezia and European hopefuls, Atalanta, in this weekend’s Serie A action with both teams needing a result here.
Venezia currently occupy third from bottom place in the Serie A standings and therefore find themselves in the relegation zone, level on points with second from bottom Genoa but six points adrift of Cagliari and safety as the hosts look to end an alarming seven-match losing streak.
Time is fast running out for Venezia who have lost four of these seven matches away from home while three defeats on home soil at their Stadio Pierluigi Penzo against Sassuolo, Sampdoria and Udinese have also contributed to Venezia’s precarious position in the Italian top flight.
In addition, Venezia have managed to pick up just two wins on home soil all season to date which came in the shape of wins against Fiorentina and Roma earlier in the season but the hosts have now failed to win any of their last 11 games at their Stadio Pierluigi Penzo.
Atalanta suffered a third league defeat on the trot in Serie A on the weekend when they were handed a disappointing 2-1 defeat at home by Verona and as a result, the visitors have dropped down the Serie A pecking order to 8th place where they find themselves five points adrift of the top six and 6th placed Fiorentina.
Previous losses incurred against Napoli and Sassuolo have now seriously called into question as to whether Atalanta can be considered serious challengers for a possible top six finish in this season’s Serie A campaign.
Especially as the bigger picture shows that the visitors have collected just two wins out of their last 12 games overall.
This upcoming trip to face Venezia therefore takes on even more meaning for Atalanta as they seek to close the gap on the top six clubs but although they’d previously been tough to beat on the road, putting together a very impressive 18-match unbeaten run on their travels, recent results have seen a dramatic decline in Atalanta’s fortunes on their travels.
However, although Atalanta have lost three out of their last four outings away from home with defeats incurred at Fiorentina, Roma and Sassuolo, the visitors should find a way to win at Venezia.
