Monaco Set to Lay Down Their Marker on the Top Four by Beating Nice
AS Monaco vs OGC Nice - 20/04/2022
2857
Monaco and Nice will clash at the Stade Louis II stadium this Wednesday night in what is arguably the biggest game of the season for either side with the top four race wide open ahead of the final few weeks of the campaign.
It’s been a wild season in Ligue 1 for the European spots, and while Paris Saint-Germain are easing to another title, clubs from second down to 10th have been within touching distance of the top four throughout most of the campaign.
Clubs such as last season's champions, Lille, currently sit in ninth and only six points adrift of fourth-placed Nice.
It now makes this game absolutely vital for both sides, and with fifth-placed Strasbourg facing off with third-placed Rennes, it means every side from third to fifth meet on Wednesday.
As a result, the winners of either clash will simply move into the top four, with only three points separating Monaco in sixth and Rennes in third.
The competitive nature of the top four in France has seen Monaco move from as low as 10th a few months back into sixth, which has seen them put together a stunning run of form in the past month.
After losing their Europa League round of 16 tie against Braga, the 2016/17 Ligue 1 champions thrashed the league leaders PSG 3-0 soon afterback in March.
Monaco would edge past Metz soon after, and then beat Troyes and Rennes in the past 10 days as well.
It has now put them on a four-game winning run in Ligue 1 and saw them rocket up the table, with the likes of Wissam Ben Yedder carrying on their excellent form this season.
The French striker now has 19 goals in all competitions following his goal against Rennes, and with Kevin Volland only netting seven goals this campaign, the importance of the former Sevilla man is clear to see every week.
Nice have had a tumble within a similar period, however, as they lost grip on second place at the hands of Marseille and they now only sit ahead of Monaco by a point.
On the other hand, their defence remains the best in the league this campaign with them conceding only 28 times across 32 games.
At the same time, they have scored just 42 league goals, which is the lowest inside the top eight.
It’s a massive game for both sides, and likely going to be a close one as a result. Forebet predicts a game of over 2.5 goals and Monaco to win.
