Athletic Club set to dent Cadiz’s survival hopes

On Thursday night, Cadiz hosts Athletic Club at the Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla, in a game that could be massive for the home team’s chances of survival in La Liga this season.

Cadiz pulled off a shock 1-0 win at in-form Barcelona last time out in La Liga. The win moved the Yellow Submarine two points clear of the relegation zone. The fight for survival looks set to be a titanic one, with just three points separating 15th place Getafe and 18th place Mallorca.

Cadiz has impressed in defence in recent months, as they have now kept clean sheets in six of their previous nine matches in the Spanish top-flight, including in three of their last four league games.

Sergio’s team has been relatively hard to beat on home soil in La Liga of late, as a 2-1 defeat against Real Betis in their last home match in the Spanish top-flight ended a five-game unbeaten run on home soil.

The game against the Andalusians was also a rare high-scoring home game for Cadiz, as their previous four La Liga matches on home soil produced under 2.5 goals.

A recent inconsistent run of league form has seemingly scuppered Athletic Club’s chances of playing European football next season.

The boys from Bilbao currently sit in eighth place in La Liga, ten points adrift of local rivals Real Sociedad, who are in the last European qualification spot.

A record of just one win in their last five matches in La Liga has been a major factor in Athletic’s failure to mount a realistic bid for the top six. Last time out the visitors suffered a 2-0 home defeat against Celta Vigo.
