There’s also action from the French top flight on Sunday evening when 4th placed Strasbourg play host to 9th placed Lyon at their Stade de la Meinau with both teams looking to further enhance their respective ambitions for European involvement for next season.

Of these two teams, Strasbourg perhaps look the more favourably placed to realise European football next term as the hosts occupy 4th place in the Ligue 1 standings where they hold a four-point buffer over 6th placed Monaco.

And they are just five points behind 2nd placed Marseille and a possible Champions League spot.

A stubborn run of eight games without defeat has helped lift Strasbourg up into the top five which includes four wins over the likes of Nantes, Angers, Monaco and Lens.

While also picking up useful points in draws with St Etienne, Nice, Reims and Lorient, making Sunday’s hosts a tough team to beat in recent times.

Indeed, Strasbourg have lost just once in their last 12 games in the domestic top flight, so they need to be respected here; the hosts are also unbeaten in their last five home games, winning four of these matches.

Lyon moved up into the top half of the Ligue 1 table with a 3-2 home win over Angers last weekend but a recent mixed bag of results prior to this welcome victory mean that the visitors are still six points behind the top five pack.

With just three wins out of their last eight games overall in the French top flight, two of which were on home soil at their Groupama Stadium, Lyon continue to make life difficult for themselves as they try to emulate last season’s 4th place finish this term.

Defeats to Monaco, Lille and Rennes have pegged Lyon back in their pursuit of European football for next season while results away from home have also been below par in terms of expectations; just three wins on the road in their previous 12 games on their travels underline this.

Interestingly, the draw has been the most prevalent result in these last 12 away games for Lyon who have also held the upper hand over Strasbourg in recent previous exchanges, winning four out of the last five meetings.

But it could be a different story this time around with Strasbourg pressing for a potentially lucrative Champions League spot and these two could cancel each other out as a result.
