Ligue 1's Extroadinary Relegation Battle to Witness a Draw Between Lorient and St-Étienne
FC Lorient vs AS Saint-Etienne - 08/04/2022
3560
Two sides slumped into the bottom half of the Ligue 1 table will clash this weekend as FC Lorient welcome Saint-Étienne to the Stade du Moustoir as the fight for relegation seriously heats up in France’s top tier.
Saint-Étienne have drastically turned things around in 2022 as they looked destined for Ligue 2 as we entered the new year.
Fast forward four months, however, and Pascal Dupraz has managed to claw his way out of the bottom two and into the relegation play-off spot following the much-needed departure of Claude Puel.
Saint-Étienne were bottom of the table for much of the campaign, but now, they have managed to put together a string of results that has given them great confidence stretching back to late March when they beat Angers.
A stunning victory over Montpellier would follow, along with another win over Clermont Foot to make it three wins in three games.
Their last victory was over Metz back in early March, and they have also managed to rack up decent draws against LOSC Lille and Troyes. Last time out though, Marseille would reign supreme over them in a 4-2 victory, but goals from Denis Bouanga and Lucas Gourna-Douath will have given them hope of getting a result here.
As of now, Dupraz has led his side to within just one point of both Clermont Foot and Lorient in the table, and this game here is now a chance for Saint-Étienne to jump out of the bottom three for the first time in months - something that was unthinkable back in December.
Lorient returned to the losing column as well last time around as they were hammered by the destined champions 5-1, Paris Saint-Germain.
Terem Moffi scored for the club that day in what was his fifth goal of the season as he sits as the club's top scorer, which all but sums up just how poor Lorient have been this campaign.
Christophe Pélissier have managed the same amount of wins (6) as their opposition here, but with 25 goals scored throughout the Ligue 1 season, no side have netted fewer.
Lorient did manage to string together some excellent results over the past few weeks, however, as they registered wins over Lens, Brest, and Clermont Foot.
It’s set to be an incredibly close game given the importance for either side in their fight for survival. Forebet predicts the game to see under 2.5 goals and for the clash to end in a draw.
