Burnley are 19th in the Premier League standings and slowly slipping toward the Championship for next season. Four points separate Burnley from safety heading into a Wednesday night home fixture with Everton.
The Toffees are the team that Burnley are chasing in the Premier League. Frank Lampard’s side is coming off of another abysmal loss in the Premier League. Everton fell 2-1 to West Ham in London on Sunday and now face a quick turnaround and a must-win game.
Burnley are unbeaten in their last two matches with Everton at Turf Moor. However, the Toffees won the reverse fixture versus Burnley this season when the teams met at Goodison Park.
Everton’s win versus Burnley seems like a lifetime ago, however. The game was played in September and Rafael Benitez was Everton’s manager.
Burnley scored first through Ben Mee at Goodison Park, but Everton came back to win with goals from Michael Keane, Andros Townsend, and Demarai Gray.
Everton took a mere three points from the last 18 points available in the league. They lost five of their last six games in the Premier League heading into Wednesday. Burnley picked up four points from the last 18 points on offer. Their last four games all ended as losses.
Burnley have scored the league’s second-fewest goals with 22. Meanwhile, Everton have only scored 30 goals, which is the fifth-fewest in the Premier League. Everton have conceded the fifth-most goals this season with 49. Burnley have allowed 40 goals.
Sean Dyche has five names on the Burnley injury list ahead of the midweek clash. Erik Pieters has a knee injury and is ruled out of the game. Ben Mee is also set to miss out following a calf injury. Nathan Collins is suspended for the match, while Matej Vydra and Johann Berg Gudmundsson are major doubts.
Lampard could be without as many as 10 players for the visit to Turf Moor. Yerry Mina is a doubt with a thigh injury. Seamus Coleman is ill and is currently unlikely to play. Donny van de Beek is a major doubt following a thigh injury.
Meanwhile, Lampard will be without Fabian Delph and Nathan Patterson due to injury. Michael Keane and Allan will both miss the game due to suspension.
Despite Everton’s poor form, they should claim a second win in as many games versus Burnley in the league. It may not be pretty but Everton should claim three massive points with under 2.5 goals scored.
