Monaco to claim vital win at Metz

The French Ligue 1 action continues on Sunday and features this upcoming encounter between relegation candidates Metz and 7th placed Monaco who are chasing a possible European spot for next season, when the two teams meet at the Stade Saint-Symphorien.

It’s been a wretched Ligue 1 campaign to date for second from bottom placed Metz who find themselves five points adrift of safety prior to this weekend’s French top flight fixtures and this upcoming clash against Monaco doesn’t look any easier for the hosts who are desperate to climb out of the relegation zone.

Metz’s last success came in the shape of a arrow 1-0 win away from home at 12th placed Reims.

But then, the hosts have struggled for a win and indeed have failed to win any of their subsequent eight games overall, losing four and drawing the other four.

To make matters worse, Metz have failed to score in six of these last eight games and their last game before the international break ended in a heavy 6-1 thrashing away from home at Rennes, so confidence is likely to be fragile.

Onto Monaco, and the visitors lifted themselves up to 7th place in the Ligue 1 standings with a resounding and impressive 3-0 home win over the runaway league leaders, PSG, at their Stade Louis II ground just before the international break.

They’ll be looking for more of the same when they make their way to the Stade Saint-Symphorien on Sunday afternoon.

Overall results have been a little inconsistent where Monaco have been concerned as the visitors have picked up previous wins against Lyon and Marseille but they’ve also fallen foul to losses against Reims and Strasbourg as well.

In addition, Monaco have managed to pick up just two wins out of their last 10 outings on their travels but the lure of a possible top five finish should be enough to spur Monaco onto better things starting this Sunday as they now only trail 5th placed Strasbourg by a four-point margin.

Monaco have also held the upper hand in previous exchanges against Metz as the principality club have won each of the last four meetings on the trot against Metz, scoring 9 goals in the process and keeping clean sheets in each of these encounters as well.
