Southampton tipped to aggravate Leeds United’s relegation fears

Leeds United will be looking to steer further clear of the Premier League relegation zone when they welcome Southampton to Elland Road on Saturday.

The Yorkshire club find themselves sixteenth in the table – seven points clear of the bottom three – although some teams below them have three games in hand.

Meanwhile, Southampton occupy eleventh place – six points ahead of Leeds and only one point outside the top half.

Leeds return to action after claiming two huge wins before the international break, keeping them clear of the relegation zone for the time being.

After beating relegation rivals Norwich City 2-1, Jesse Marsch’s men came from two goals down to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-2 last time out.

Still, there is no hiding from the fact that Leeds have managed to win just seven of their 30 Premier League games this season.

On top of that, Leeds have the worst defensive record in the division – having conceded a whopping 67 goals this term.

With that statistic in mind, you probably won’t be surprised that Leeds have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their previous 17 clashes across all competitions.

On the flip side, Southampton head into Saturday’s clash on a disappointing four-game losing run in all competitions.

Following Premier League defeats to Aston Villa, Newcastle and Watford, they were thrashed 4-1 by Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The Saints have struggled on the road in recent times, too, winning only four of their past 27 aways games in the Premier League.

Given that over 2.5 goals have been scored in each of Southampton’s last five games, we should see plenty of goals on Saturday.

Head-to-head: Leeds and Southampton have faced each other three times since Leeds returned to the Premier League in 2020.

Leeds did the double of the Saints last season, winning 3-0 at home and 2-0 away. However, Southampton beat Leeds 1-0 in the reverse fixture back in October.

Team news: Leeds’ lengthy injury list features multiple key players such as Patrick Bamford, Illan Meslier, Junior Firpo and Diego Llorente.

As for Southampton, they are currently without Lyanco Silveira Neves Vojnovic and Alex McCarthy due to injury.

Although Leeds enjoyed something of an upturn before the international break, Southampton should be too strong for Marsch’s men.

Given Leeds’ woeful defensive record, Forebet predicts that Southampton will score over 1.5 goals on their way to victory.
