On Saturday afternoon, arch-rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers are Aston Villa will lock horns as they battle it out for local bragging rights at Molineux.
Although the West Midlands clubs are separated by a solitary place in the Premier League table, eighth-place Wolves lead ninth-place Aston Villa by ten points.
Due to a recent downturn in form, the Wanderers find themselves four points outside the top six and eight points shy of the Champions League spots.
Between December 15 and February 20, Wolves suffered just one defeat in eight Premier League games – picking up six wins along the way.
Since then, however, they have lost four of their six league matches. That run has all but ended their hopes of playing Champions League football next season.
On a brighter note, it is worth pointing out that Wolves boast the fourth-best defensive record in the division – having conceded only 26 goals in 30 games.
Still, they are the lowest scorers in the top 12. Only five teams have netted fewer Premier League goals than Wolves this season.
As for Aston Villa, it’s fair to say that they have endured an inconsistent run since Steven Gerrard replaced Dean Smith back in November.
Since November 11, the Villains have registered eight wins, two draws and nine defeats across all competitions.
Villa notched three consecutive clean-sheet victories across late February and early March, dispatching Brighton, Southampton and Leeds without conceded a single goal.
However, they head into Saturday’s showdown on the back of two straight defeats after losing to West Ham and Arsenal before the international break.
Head-to-head: In the reverse fixture back in October, Wolves scored three goals in the final ten minutes to snatch a dramatic 3-2 win at Villa Park.
Across the past seven meetings between Wolves and Villa, both sides have picked up three wins. The other encounter ended in a draw.
Team news: Wolves striker Raul Jimenez is suspended following his red card last time out. On the injury front, Ruben Neves is a doubt.
Aston Villa look set to be without the injured trio of Marvelous Nakamba, Lucas Digne and Kourtney Hause for Saturday’s clash.
It is no secret that both Wolves and Villa are going through a sticky period at the moment. That said, Wolves have outperformed Villa for much of the season.
For that reason, Forebet predicts that Wolves will score over 1.5 goals on their way to claiming all three points – and the West Midlands bragging rights – at Molineux.
